The hiking club ('Spore') of Richards Bay High School has been in existence for more than 20 years. The purpose of the club is to give learners exposure to South Africa's wonderful scenery and in so doing to cultivate a love for nature and outdoor life. Learners also learn responsibility and independence on excursions. Such excursions contribute to the development of leadership and the identification of leaders.
The club has in the past concentrated on routes of 4 to 5 days, but lately the club tries as much as possible to take part in weekend and one-day excursions.
Every year about 12 learners of the club complete the Giants Cup route in the Southern Drakensberg. This 5-day route covers a distance of about 50 km from Sani Pass to Bushman's Neck. It is an unforgettable experience for learners, and most of them try to complete the route more than once during their school careers.
