On 16 - 19 December Siyabonga Sithole took part in the National Chess Competition in Boksburg. He won gold in the u/8 section.
In his own words:
I started playing chess at Brackenham Primary school at the age of 12 years. I received instruction from a wonderful lady named Lisa Griffiths. In 2013 I came to Hoërskool Richardsbaai. I played in several tournaments and got my first half-colours.
In 2014 I won my first trophy at the Uthungulu Chess trials and I was selected to play at the South African Junior Chess Championships for the first time.
In 2014 I won the Chess Player of the Year Award in school.
In 2015 I won two more trophies.
2016 Has been the highlight of my chess career. I won two trophies, received full colours for chess and I was selected to play at the KZNCC (KwaZulu Natal Chess Championships). My team got second place at the KZNCC and won silver medals. Later in the year I played in the 2016 SAJCC in Boksburg, Gauteng, at the Birchwood Hotel. I won six games of seven and won a board prize in the under 18 category.
I’m inspired by the living chess legend named Gary Kasparov. My motto in chess is “believe it, dream it, work for it and achieve it.”
I thank God for the talent He has given me.
Nikash Baboolal and Siyabonga Sithole both took part in the Uthungulu District Chess Trails. There were approximately 300 participants of all ages.
Siaybonga got a trophy for 2nd place in U/18 and Nikash got a trophy for 1st place in U/14. We are very proud of both these boys!!
